Scheduled Planting Time

Unless you live in a moderate climate year-round, your region will have optimal growing season dates that are recommended specifically for your area. Generally, tomato plants do best if they are planted about 2 weeks after the last frost of the cold season. They really do not care for cold weather so you need to make sure not to plant tomatoes until it is consistently warm both day and night.

The type and time of day you actually plant the tomatoes is also important. It works best to plant them when the sky is cloudy or overcast. If that is not an option and you have to plant during sunny days, schedule your planting time either early in the day or late in the day. Newly planted tomatoes get stressed by the bright sunlight and high heat when first planted so protecting them from those stressors is important if possible.

If you grow your own seedlings, you will already know the timing of the growing season in your area. But if not, you can check with your local agricultural extension office or do an online search for growing season dates in your region.

Cold temperatures are poorly tolerated by tomato plants so if you think frosts are still a possibility when your seedlings are ready for planting, wait a few days just to make sure the tomato plants are not subjected to a frost if at all possible.
